What is a yurt anyway?

Yurt Structure

Our yurts for sale use wooden components, we have used Larch Wood. Larch is excellent for use in building due to it’s tough, waterproof and durable nature. In central Europe it is viewed as one of the best wood for building houses and as such is a highly coveted material.

Door  Mongolian larch wood, hand painted or carved in traditional nomadic style.

Walls or Khana – The trellis is essentially the walls of the yurt. Hand planed in the traditional way to follow the true grain of the wood and create a stronger trellis. Animal fibres are used to hold the trellis together.

Roof Poles – The poles form the roof of the yurt connecting the trellis to the crown, creating a beautiful circular pattern. Mongolian larch wood, hand painted or carved in traditional nomadic style.

Crown Wheel – This is the beautiful centre piece of the yurt, also made from strong Mongolian larch wood and hand painted or carved. We’ve adapted these crowns with a lip that overlaps the fabric layers for an extra waterproof seal.

Dragon Posts – In Mongolian culture, these posts form the sacred threshold of the yurt. They are not usually included in European made yurts. They add structural support as well as adding to the charm of the design.

Our Yurts are painted with European standard paint, not the toxic  paint used on cheaper yurts.

We also use premium, industry standard waterproof and flexible woodglue for all workwork joins.

The wood used is carefully selected and then seasoned to create the best quality yurts.

Our yurt maker threw a crown off a 2 story building a few times and still the crown did not break!

Fabric Layers

Cotton cover This is the inner liner, forming the backdrop. 100% plain white cotton.

Felt – Made from 100% natural Mongolian yak and sheep wool. This acts as insulation, giving the yurt a warm authentic feel. Felt comes in lot’s of different qualities and we only use the best.  Its this same felt that keeps Nomads warm when temperatures drop down to -40c on the steppe.

Waterproof House Wrap Cover – Our yurts include an extra waterproof cover, a thin layer between the felt and the canvas. The same material that keeps timber framed building breathable and waterproof also keeps our yurt dry.

Canvas Cover – Made from a heavy duty  12oz poly/cotton canvas. Offering both sun and rain protection these premium yurt covers are available in plain white, green or white with traditional patterns.

Crown coverA truly well thought out design makes these crown covers strong, waterproof whist still allowing plenty of light in. Fully adapted for a wet Cornish winter with clear PVC skylight and section for installing an optional wood burner.
